1 Day in Annecy

Arriving in Annecy, France

If you take a train or a bus into town, the station is only about a ten minute walk to the Old Town area.  We found it easiest to book a hotel near the station so we could drop off our luggage and still have a quick, easy walk into the Old Town, “Vieille Ville”.

Exploring the Romantic Village – 1 Day in Annecy

No map is needed for this little town.  You can use the lake as your compass.  Meander through the old streets along the canals scattered with flower pots only adding to its appeal.

Photograph the Palais de L’Ile

Built on a natural rocky island in the 12th century, this picturesque fortified house has served various purposes throughout history, including being a medieval prison, a courthouse, and even a mint.

Often described as a “house in the shape of a ship,” the Palais de l’Île captivates visitors with its intriguing design and fascinating history.

The Palais de L’Ile is the most photographed place in town, it is the building around which the canals fork.  Pont Perrier is the bridge from which the photos are taken.   Regardless, we found plenty of photo ops along the canals and the arched passageways along the historic streets.

There’s no more recognizable spot in the village to capture a family photo.

Watch the Sunset from Musée-Château

Catch the sunset from the Musée-Château at the top of the hill.

Savor the Lake Life

The Lake Life, “La Vie du Lac” is a major draw to this area.  Spend time on the water whether you book a cruise, paddle boat, sail boat, or motor boat. It’s all about immersing yourself in the clearest, most mesmerizing waters you’ve ever seen.

Take your pick: a leisurely cruise, paddleboat adventure, or sailboat excursion – there’s something for everyone!

Personally, we went for the paddleboat option, and let me just say, it was a blast! We glided across the calm waters, taking in the breathtaking views, and guess what? It only cost us 22€ per hour, which is a total steal! We found a sweet spot right in the middle of the lake to enjoy a picnic. I can’t recommend it enough to get on the water!

Parc Charles Bosson

Wander the shore line for beautiful views of the mountains behind sparkling water.  We walked from Old Town to Parc Charles Bosson where we laid in the grass sunbathing like the locals in front of the Imperial Casino.

Kids will love the yard at the Imperial Casino. There’s space to burn energy and lots of geese who come right up to you along the water.

Where to Eat Dinner

We found the place in Annecy known for their Raclette and Fondues.  It is called Le Freti. You should definitely make a reservation as they fill up, especially the tables with outlets for the Raclette machines.

You can’t go wrong at any of the restaurants in Old Town and prices seemed highly comparable across them.

Gelato & Chocolate

Oh, let me tell you about the treats in Annecy, France!

It’s like a dessert lover’s paradise with gelato waiting for you at every corner.

We stumbled upon this absolute gem called Meyer Le Chocolatier d’Annecy and their chocolate is out of this world! We couldn’t resist indulging ourselves and ended up buying more to take home. Trust me, it was totally worth it.

The moral of the story: when you’re in Annecy, make sure you save room for dessert because the sweet treats here are next-level amazing!

Explore the Market

On Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays from 7am-1pm, the market fills many of the streets of old town with breads, olives, cheese, vegetables, fruits, and craft goods. If your 1 day in Annecy falls on one of these days, don’t miss the atmosphere and flavors of their market.

If You Have More Than 1 Day in Annecy

Consider a trip to the Chateau de Duingt Castle, hike in the Alps, or try some adventure sports!  Annecy is the birth place of paragliding. I would have loved to go, but the season hadn’t started.  I was also tempted by the Hot Air Balloons at daybreak.
