Chicago to Gatlinburg Drive - Featured

If you’re planning a road trip from Chicago to Gatlinburg, you’re in for a drive that feels like three vacations rolled into one.

I’ve done this route myself with my family, and between the quirky roadside stops, good food, and kid-friendly attractions, we were never bored.

Here’s a cheat sheet for making the most of the journey, especially if you’re traveling with kids.

Planning the Drive from Chicago to Gatlinburg

Depending on which route you take from Chicago to Gatlinburg, the drive clocks in at around 9 hours without stops.

But if you’re anything like me, you’re going to want to stretch it out over a couple of days and hit some of the best family-friendly stops along the way. We usually go down I-65 through Indianapolis and then decide if we want to include Cincinnati or Mammoth Cave on the route. Indy to Louisville to Lexington to Gatlinburg would be the most direct route without those stops.

This guide includes Cincinnati on the way south and the Mammoth Cave National Park and Lincoln Birthplace NHS on the way north.

First Stop: Indianapolis

There’s so much to do in the Indianapolis area, depending on how much time you want to commit.

If you need an active break for the kids, our favorite is Cool Creek Park & Nature Center. Here, your kids can run through the trees and climb playgrounds while you enjoy a quiet moment with coffee. Don’t skip the nature center—it’s small, free, and sparks curiosity.

If you’ve got time for a longer stop, the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is unreal. We spent hours here and still didn’t see it all. Dinosaurs, an indoor carousel, a sports complex—it’s hands-on heaven for kids. It gets busy on weekends, so if you can plan a weekday stop, you’ll avoid the crowds.

If traffic is dense, you’ll want to avoid the city. Recently we stopped at the Fort Ben Cultural Campus on the outskirts of Indianapolis and marveled over the Musical Swings.

Cincinnati, OH

Cincinnati is where we usually plan to land for the first night of our Chicago to Gatlinburg drive. It’s got enough to keep the kids entertained without feeling overwhelming.

In the morning, start the day at Highfield Discovery Garden. It’s magical—treehouses, a musical playground, a nature center, and secret paths. Admission is just $7 (or $3.50 November to March.)

If you’re up for some presidential history, the William Howard Taft National Historic Site isn’t far off the route and is a low-key stop that only takes about 30 minutes to walk through. Our kids liked the Junior Ranger program.

Devou Park’s NaturePlay@BCM has a fun natural playground built right into the hillside. We brought a picnic here and ended up staying longer than planned.

South of Cincinnati you may be interested in the Ark Encounter. Their full-size Noah’s Ark replica is something else. It’s a bit pricey, so you’ll only want to stop if you can plan to stay and get your money’s worth.

Lexington, KY

The Kentucky Horse Park is a must if your kids are into animals. They have some extra special celebrity animal encounters around the Derby timeframe too. If you’re pulling a camper like we were, they even have an onsite campground!

History buffs should check out the Mary Todd Lincoln House. It’s a short tour but full of Civil War-era information.

If you’re looking for a quick adult-friendly stop, Lexington Brewing & Distilling Co offers short tours, and there’s usually a food truck nearby for something quick to eat.

Knoxville, TN — Almost There!

By the time you get to Knoxville, you’re not far from Gatlinburg, but don’t skip it. Muse Knoxville is a great kids’ museum with ASTC reciprocity—plenty of active STEM fun packed into a manageable space.

Just need good food and a breather? Head to Market Square downtown. Plenty of good restaurants and space for kids to move and don’t miss Cruze Farm Ice Cream for dessert.

For something outdoorsy, check out Ijams Nature Center. They’ve got boardwalks, trails, and a nature playground. If you’re up for it, you can rent canoes or paddleboards on Mead’s Quarry Lake.

Buc-ees Refuel Stop

Refill your tank, battery, or stomach at Buc-ees mega gas station. This place is a full blown shopping experience and they’re known for their food and ultra clean restrooms.

Detour Worth Taking: Mammoth Cave and Lincoln’s Birthplace

This year we tacked on a detour to Mammoth Cave National Park, and I’m so glad we did because the kids were wowed. The cave tours are amazing—just make sure you book ahead and bring jackets—it’s always chilly underground. We recommend printing their Junior Ranger program in advance and getting a head start on the workbook. The also offer Cave Scientist and Night Explorer badges here.

Nearby, the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park is a short but sweet stop if you like to tour NPS sites.

Louisville, KY

The Louisville Slugger Museum is always a hit (pun intended). Our kids loved seeing the world’s largest baseball bat, how bats are made, and there’s even a batting cage.

If you’re traveling with little science lovers, the Kentucky Science Center is right across from the Slugger Museum and has plenty of interactive stuff to keep kids engaged. It has ASTC reciprocity.

In a future Chicago to Gatlinburg drive, we want to make time for the Louisville Mega Cavern which has underground zip lines and a ropes course!

Indianapolis Take 2: Home Stretch

Surely, everyone is feeling pretty beat by now, but you gotta eat! Try Shapiro’s Delicatessen on the south side of Indianapolis. It’s always packed with locals for casual comfort foods and decadent cake and pie slices!

The counter style service makes it quick and efficient for your pit stop. The parking lot is large as well, so we didn’t have an issue parking our camper.
