Ecuador is a country of great variety, from bustling cities, lush rainforests, Andean peaks, to the Galápagos Islands.
Traveling to Ecuador comes with its own set of quirks and tips that can make your trip smoother and more enjoyable.
Ecuador Travel Tips
Planning a trip? Here’s are the Ecuador Travel Tips you need to know so you can make the most of your adventure.
The National Currency is the US Dollar
This surprised me to find out, but Ecuador has been on the US Dollar for years! In 2000, they dollarized to help stabilized their economy after a financial crisis and severe inflation.
Carry Plenty of Cash
Ecuador uses the US dollar, so there’s no need to worry about exchanging currency if you’re visiting from the states. However, having cash, especially small bills, is essential.
Many places, particularly in the Galápagos Islands, prefer cash, and credit card transactions often come with hefty fees. Always carry smaller denominations, as change for larger bills can be hard to come by.
It’s also easier to negotiate at markets if you have exact change.
Set Up WhatsApp Before You Go
In Ecuador, WhatsApp is a primary mode of communication for businesses and locals alike. From arranging taxis to booking tours, most interactions can be handled via WhatsApp.
Make sure it’s installed and set up before your trip. It works on Wi-Fi.
Brush Up on Basic Spanish
Knowing some basic Spanish can make a big difference in your travels.
While you’ll find English speakers in touristy areas, locals outside of those regions may not speak English.
Learning some essential phrases can lead to friendlier interactions and smoother transactions.
Avoid Single-Use Plastic
Ecuador, particularly the Galápagos Islands, has strict regulations to protect its environment. Avoid packing single-use plastics like grocery bags or straws. Instead, bring reusable shopping bags, water bottles, and containers to minimize waste and support eco-friendly travel.
Upon arrival to the Galapagos, luggage is scanned for dangerous bio materials and any excessive single use plastics will be confiscated. Read our article on flying into the Galapagos to know what else to expect.
Toilet Etiquette
An important habit change in Ecuador is remembering to dispose of toilet paper in the trash, not the toilet.
Plumbing systems aren’t built to handle it.
Also, check for toilet paper before entering a stall, as dispensers are sometimes located outside. This is one of the Ecuador Travel Tips no one seems to mention!
Carrying a small pack of tissues with you is a good idea!
Stay Connected with Airalo
Staying connected in mainland Ecuador is easy with Airalo, an affordable eSIM service. I paid $8 for 1 GB for 1 week.
You can install it on your phone before your trip. Then it’ll activate when you land in Quito/Guayaquil and connect to cellular service for the first time.
Be sure to disable all cellular connections to your home cell service providers to avoid international roaming fees.
While it won’t work in the Galápagos, Wi-Fi is widely available on the islands.
Tipping is Appreciated
Tipping is not compulsory in Ecuador, but it’s a thoughtful gesture.
Round up your bill at restaurants or leave a few extra dollars for taxi drivers and tour guides. Your generosity will be warmly received.
The Post Office No Longer Exists
If you love sending postcards, this one might be a disappointment: Ecuador’s national postal service dissolved a few years ago.
While private courier services exist, they’re not geared toward postcards, so you may have to carry your postcards back with you.
Plan Your Ride From Quito Airport
The drive from Quito Airport to Old Town takes between 45 minutes and 1 hour 15 minutes, depending on traffic.
Expect to pay between $18 and $30 for a taxi.
Always agree on a price beforehand, and if Uber prices surge over $30, opt for a regular taxi instead.
Prepare for High Altitude
One of the most important Ecuador travel tips is to be aware of the risk of altitude sickness. Many parts of the country sit at high altitudes, like Quito and Cuenca.
Symptoms of altitude sickness include headaches, fatigue, and nausea.
Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol on your first day, and consider acclimatizing slowly. For example, give yourself at least 24 hours before partaking in strenuous activity, like a Cotopaxi hike.
Consider asking your physician for medication that can help ward off these symptoms. I took acetazolamide 24 hours before arrival and didn’t feel any symptoms. My husband didn’t take anything and was dizzy and nauseous climbing the tower at Basilica del Voto National.
Pack Layers
Despite its location on the equator, Ecuador’s geography creates a variety of climates. The coastal regions and Amazon are humid and warm, while the highlands are cooler with frequent rain.
If you’re traveling to various parts of the country. Be sure to research the climate of each and pack a variety of layers to easily adjust.
Lather Up
The equatorial sun is intense, even on cloudy days. Sunscreen isn’t just for beach days—apply it liberally whether you’re on the islands, exploring Quito, or hiking Cotopaxi.
If you’re headed to the Galapagos, be sure to purchase reef safe sunscreen.
Avoid Drinking Tap Water
Stick to bottled or boiled water to stay safe. Be mindful of ice in drinks and fresh produce that may have been washed in tap water.
Some say to avoid even brushing your teeth with tap water.
Stay Alert
Ecuador is generally safe, but as with any tourist destination, extra precautions are wise. Avoid displaying valuables, stick to well-lit areas at night, and use trusted taxis or ride-hailing apps.
Haggle Respectfully at Markets
Markets like Otavalo are famous for handmade goods, and bargaining is expected. Start low but be fair—vendors appreciate respectful negotiations.
Taste New Flavors
Try exotic fruits like naranjilla, taxo, and guanábana. Don’t miss the chocolate—Ecuador produces some of the best in the world! If you’re feeling adventurous, try cuy (roasted guinea pig), a traditional Andean delicacy.

Always Count Your Change
When paying in cash, always pay close attention to the tender as your total is calculated and count the change given back to you.

Catherine – Savvy Family Travel
My favorite pastime is finding fun, interesting experiences to share with family and friends.
I’m a mom of two energetic and curious boys who have endless patience with my tendency to over plan activities on our family vacations. My tireless husband, Troy, provides comic relief, is our favorite photographer, and expert navigator.
I’m a firm believer that travel with kids doesn’t have to be intimidating or expensive. It can be affordable, epic, and, dare I say, even relaxing!
