Are you planning to visit Madrid but have an extra day to spare? Look no further than Toledo – a charming city with a distinct blend of Christian, Jewish, and Muslim influences. Toledo is only an hour away making it a perfect day trip from Madrid. In this blog post, I’ll give you insider tips on how to spend a day in Toledo and make the most of your trip.

Guide to Toledo: Day Trip from Madrid

Getting to Toledo from Madrid

There are two primary ways to get to Toledo from Madrid. You can either take an “on your own” bus trip for €18 round trip, which takes 1 hour and 15 minutes each way, or the high-speed Avant train for about €26 round trip, which takes only 32 minutes each way. I recommend taking the train as it’s faster and more comfortable.

Things to do in Toledo on a Day Trip from Madrid

Toledo may be a small city but it has a lot to offer. You can see a lot with just half a day in Toledo as long as you’re prepared to walk uphill both ways. That said, we found this to be a wonderful way to experience the city; just getting lost in its winding streets.

Here are some must-visit places that will make your day trip from Madrid worthwhile:

1. Santa Iglesia Catedral Primada de Toledo

This historic site at over 700 years old is a must-visit when in Toledo. The Santa Iglesia Catedral Primada de Toledo has an outstanding collection of European art and interesting history from Napoléon’s invasion.

The entrance fee is €12 and it’s definitely worth it.

Once inside, you’ll be greeted by an impressive collection of art and artefacts, including paintings by El Greco and Goya, gold and silverwork, and a stunning altar.

2. San Juan de los Reyes Monastery

A visit to this stunning monastery only costs about €2.50 so its a no brainer.

This monastery was built in the 15th century to commemorate the victory of the Battle of Toro. The architecture of the building is breathtaking, and it’s hard not to be awed by its grandeur.

3. Eat Marzipan Cake

While in Toledo, don’t miss their renowned Marzipan cake.  You can even buy some made by nuns at the convent.  The cakes are handmade and delicious. If you’re lucky, you might even get a chance to meet the nuns who make them.

I suppose they’ve had a lot of down time over the years to perfect their recipes.

Look for signs that say “Dulces Convento.”

4. Take a Panoramic Photo of the Hilltop City of Toledo, Spain

You can walk about 30 minutes along the main road to a look out point called “Mirador del Valle.” The views of Toledo from this vantage point are simply breathtaking and are sure to make for an incredible photo opportunity.

However, we recommend hiring a cab to take you up there for your photos from the town center and then head directly to the train station to conclude your day trip from Madrid.  As an added bonus, you can ask the driver to be your photographer!   That full trip will only run you about €8.

5.Alcazar de Toledo

The Alcazar de Toledo is a large stone fortification that is located at the highest point of the city, with towering corner towers that offer an incredible view of the entire city. Much of it was rebuilt in the 40s and 50s after it was damaged during the Spanish Civil War. The fortress now serves as a military museum, and it also houses Moorish architecture remnants and more general Spanish history. The visit to the Alcazar will take around 30 minutes, and the admission fee is €5.

6. Explore the Ancient Walls of Toledo

Toledo is a city that is steeped in history and tradition, and one of the best ways to experience its rich heritage is by exploring the ancient walls that surround the city. These walls were built by the Romans and expanded by the Moors, and they offer a glimpse into Toledo’s past. As you walk along the walls, you’ll encounter a variety of towers and gates that are over 800 years old. You can enter the walls through the Puerta del Sol gate, which is located near the city center.

7. Buy a Souvenir

Popular Souvenirs in Toledo included Silver (mostly in the form of ‘fake’ knives/swords which kids will love) and Leather. We, of course, sent home a postcard to ourselves.

You can also find beautiful ceramics, handicrafts, and other traditional Spanish items in the city’s many shops and souvenir stores.
