Disney Cruises are already magical… and then you add Fish Extenders into the mix and that’s another core memory. My kids still talk about running down the hallway to check if anything new showed up while we were at dinner or at the pool.
In this guide, I’m sharing our favorite fish extender gift ideas, plus exactly how it all works because it certainly feels foreign and confusing the first time around.

Fish Extender Gift Ideas
What is a Fish Extender?
On every Disney ship, you’ll notice a small fish outside each stateroom door. That’s where this whole tradition comes from.
A Fish Extender is a hanging organizer that you attach to that hook. Throughout your cruise, other guests can drop off small gifts, treats, or surprises in the pockets.
You can join a formal exchange. but even if you don’t, it’s still worth hanging one. You never know when someone might “Pixie Dust” your family and you’ll definitely enjoy doing the same for others.

DIY or Buy Fish Extender Bag
We purchased blank fish extender bags from Amazon and personalized them. I used a paint pen and Cricut-cut vinyl to stencil our names and add a Disney Cruise logo.
If DIY isn’t your thing, there are plenty of great pre-made options or Etsy offers beautiful ones! Either way, I recommend choosing something with at least enough pockets for your kids. Many cruisers also use small reuseable shopping bags for pixie dust that may come their way.
Two Types of Gifting for Fish Extenders
Pixie Dusting is the most laid-back way to participate.
Pixie Dusting
There’s no sign-up, no commitment, you just leave small surprises for other cruisers whenever you feel like it.
We’ve done this both anonymously and with little tags. Either way, the magic is in the surprise. Watching your kids discover something unexpected in the bag never gets old.

Fish Extender Exchanges (Pre-Arranged)
If you prefer something more structured, this is the way to go. The originality and creativity we found in our exchanges was beyond impressive.
These exchanges are organized through Facebook groups specific to your sailing, so you’ll want to join early. Most sign-ups close at least 30 days before the cruise. In Facebook, search for a group with the name of your ship + sail date. For example, “Disney Magic May 5-10, 2026.”
Families usually share favorite characters, kids’ ages, and preferences, which helps you personalize gifts.

Fish Extender Ideas for Anyone
Alright, you’ve signed up for a FE (Fish Extender) exchange, you have the families’ preferences and Disney favorites, but what should you bring? Here are some of the favorite things we’ve gifted and received.
Yacht-Sea Kit
I love that this gift doubles as entertainment while hanging out at a lounge or relaxing on the deck. It is also travel size so it has become a staple in our travel backpack.

Handmade Disney Crafts
One of our favorite fish extender gift ideas ever was a set of handmade character creations based on our favorite movies. Get creative with this, but a tween from our exchange made some out of Perler beads.
Disney Scrunchies
Easy to pack, useful, and always appreciated.
Salty Snacks
Pirate’s Booty on Pirate Night? Perfectly on theme.
Chocolate Pirate Coins
Another option that’s great for Pirate Night and always a hit with kids and adults.
Mickey Ears
A classic for a reason. You can find affordable light-up ones online or $15 official Disney ears at Wal-Mart. I personally love the cruise themed Amazon ears.

Waterproof Playing Cards
Great for the pool deck or beach days.
Disney Lanyard with Card Pocket
Super practical since many passengers like to keep their Key to the World Card (KTTWC) in it.
Ice Cream Sundae Kit
A mini bag of sprinkles or toppings to go with the free soft serve onboard—such a fun idea.
Disney Pins
Perfect for anyone who wants to try pin trading. Lots of cruise cabin doors will have trading boards available!

Door Decor and Magnets
Fun for decorating stateroom doors and easy to pack.
Autograph Collecting Supplies
A Sharpie and 8×10 matte is such a clever idea for character signatures. Bonus points for putting the Disney Cruise Logo or Mickey on the matte.

Movie Theater Candy Boxes
Movie nights on the ship feel extra special with a box of candy do go with your popcorn bucket.
Beach Kit
Sunscreen, a paintbrush + baby powder for sand removal, and a shovel are especially useful for a day at Castaway Cay or Lookout Cay making them one of the best fish extender gift ideas.

Fish Extender Ideas for Kids
Inflatable Sword for Pirate Night
These really rounded out my kids’ pirate night attire and other kids onboard really appreciated the surprise!
Disney Eye Found It Card Game
A fun, Disney themed game that’s perfect for downtime onboard. Great for ages 4+.
Disney Spot It
We find this game to be a little easier for younger kids, and just as engaging for all ages.
Mini LEGO Cruise Ship
A small LEGO version of the ship is such a creative and memorable surprise. We like this one on Etsy.
Glow Sticks
Perfect for evening deck parties. Or to give our kids in the bathtub.
Stickers
Always a hit, especially if they are the kind that cruisers can add to their water bottles.
Bracelets
Simple and fun for trading or wearing onboard. My kids like the snap bracelets.
Keychains
Easy to pack and great keepsakes. It’s all the rage for kids to add bouquets of keychains to their school backpacks now.
Croc Charms
A fun little upgrade for kids already wearing Crocs on the cruise. These charms are also called “jinbitz” and you can find various other things to attach them to, like bracelets or keychains.

Tide to go, pods, wrinkle release spray, and a lint roller—unexpected but incredibly useful fish extender gift ideas.
