Mount Horeb Trollway
The transformation of Mount Horeb into the “Troll Capital of the World” can be traced back to the town’s efforts to celebrate its Scandinavian roots and folklore.
In the early 1990s, local business owners and community leaders began to embrace the idea of incorporating trolls into the town’s identity, drawing inspiration from Scandinavian tales where trolls are larger-than-life creatures known for their enchantment and mischief.
The installation of whimsical wooden troll sculptures along the main street not only added a charm to the area but also served as a marketing strategy to attract visitors year round.
Meet the Mount Horeb Trolls
Businesses continue to nurture the troll culture, creatively integrating it into their business’s presence.
For instance, outside the dental office, you can find a troll proudly holding a giant troll tooth, or a hand reaching from the ground with a giant toothbrush! At the bank, a troll clutches a hefty money bag.
Outside the brew pub, a cheerful troll holds a frothy mug, inviting patrons to enjoy a refreshing drink.
As you make your way up and down the main street, take your time to soak in the unique personalities of each troll. This was especially fun with our little kids in tow, pointing out details we would’ve missed ourselves.

Spring Green, WI
Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin
A visit to Taliesin provides a glimpse into the life and legacy of Frank Lloyd Wright, one of America’s most celebrated architects.
Taliesin served as Wright’s family home, an architectural school, and a studio, showcasing his innovative designs and philosophies. Guided tours explain its evolution and significance over the years, including the darkest chapter in its history.
It was the site of a tragic event in 1914 when Wright’s family was brutally murdered by a disgruntled employee. We highly recommend this tour for those looking to understand both the beauty and the challenges that defined his life and the iconic legacy he created.
Taliesin is located in Spring Green, WI, about 35 minutes away from Mount Horeb.
Splash in the Wisconsin River
Families exploring the area surrounding Taliesin should not miss the chance to splash in the Wisconsin River, located just across from the Taliesin Visitor Center.
Aptly named on Google Maps as “Great Beach on Wisconsin River,” this quiet spot has a sandy outcropping that is perfect for family water fun. Parents will appreciate the shallow entry and enjoy watching the kayaks glide by. You can park at Peck’s Landing.
Pack your swimsuits, life vests for littles, and maybe even sand toys and a beach chair to soak in this hidden gem!
Catch a Show at the American Players Theatre
Attending a performance at the American Players Theatre (APT) is an unforgettable experience. It combines the allure of live theatre with natural beauty.
Located in the driftless hills of Spring Green, Wisconsin, the outdoor amphitheater’s wooden stage is framed by lush forests and, by the end of the show, starry skies.
Before the show, take advantage of the natural setting by enjoying a picnic in the woods. You can carry in your own picnic supplies and utilize one of the many picnic tables scattered in the woods. (Bug spray is recommended.)
Explore Wisconsin’s Quirky House on the Rock
A visit to House on the Rock is an eccentric blend of architecture, art, and fantasy. The distinctive attraction was imagined by Alex Jordan Jr. in the 1940s.
Visitors are captivated by his eclectic collections housed within, which range from intricate dollhouses to a vast assortment of mechanical music machines and fantastical sculptures.
My two favorite features were the life-size carousel and the infinity room (shown below.)

Catherine – Savvy Family Travel
My favorite pastime is finding fun, interesting experiences to share with family and friends.
I’m a mom of two energetic and curious boys who have endless patience with my tendency to over plan activities on our family vacations. My tireless husband, Troy, provides comic relief, is our favorite photographer, and expert navigator.
I’m a firm believer that travel with kids doesn’t have to be intimidating or expensive. It can be affordable, epic, and, dare I say, even relaxing!
